Filmed during the Kosovo war in 1998, before the start of NATO’s air campaign, the documentary “The Valley” takes viewers on a harrowing journey into the killing fields of Kosovo’s Drenica region. Drenica was the first and hardest-hit area, and the film shows it devastated. It reveals how a spiral of fear, hatred, and killings—fueled by ancient myths—unfolded into a destructive logic.
“The Valley” is considered one of the most acclaimed international documentaries about the Kosovo war and has won ten prestigious awards.
Producer and director Dan Reed spent most of 1998 at the heart of the Kosovo Albanian uprising and the full-scale Serbian crackdown that followed. According to Reed, the film captures “the parallel halves of truth that Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo cling to, blinding them to each other’s suffering,” and the “incestuous brutality of a war fought between neighbors.”
