Sami Mustafa is a Kosovar documentary filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter, born in Plemetina in 1984. He is particularly known for his work documenting the life, culture, identity, and rights of the Roma community. He began his filmmaking career in 2003, when, as an intern, he learned filmmaking techniques in Plemetina through the organisation Balkan Sunflowers.
In 2007, he founded Romawood, a production company focused on issues affecting the Roma community and on documenting Roma life. That same year, he initiated the project “Jekh Kham Jekh Sel / One Sun One Nation”, which became one of the most significant projects of his career. Mustafa has produced, directed, and written more than 50 short documentaries and docu-fiction films, as well as two feature-length films.
His film Road to Home was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 and was the only film from Kosovo presented at that edition. Another significant project is Trapped by Law, a documentary produced over the course of five years that tells the story of two Roma brothers deported from Germany to Kosovo. The film won the Best Documentary award at Albanian Film Week in New York.
